Facebook & 'become a fan of' changes and Greenpeace blames social websites for global warming.
Facebook & 'become a fan of' is usually meant for business and celebrity pages. The social online network has decided to use the phrase "Like" when users interact with the pages. It seems easier and makes better sense.
The online social network already lets people show that they like comments or pictures posted on the site. In fact, according to Facebook statistics, users click the term "Like" almost twice as much as they click "become a fan." Facebook says changing the button will make users more comfortable with linking up with a brand and will streamline the site.
Pages for businesses and celebrities are free to create. They are used to promote their brands by keeping customers connected to read news or information. The average monthly user becomes a fan of four pages, according to Facebook.
Greenpeace Blames Social Websites For Global Warming
Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, Google, and Yahoo all have something in common. They are contributing to global warming, according to Greenpeace. The organization claims that these companies are using coal to power data centers for their cloud-based services.
Greenpeace has released a report called "Make IT Green: Cloud Computing and its Contribution to Climate Change." The report claims that the computer giants aren't doing enough to place data centers where they can use alternative sources of energy. The group is pushing the companies for new policy changes.
Facebook has been criticized for purchasing electricity for its first custom-built data center from a utility that uses more coal on average than the rest of the United States. The data center buys electricity from Pacific Power. In fact, Greenpeace has set up a Facebook page asking them to stop using coal power.
The online social network does admit that Pacific Power uses more coal on average than other places. However, it also said it will use air-cooling, rather than air conditioning, which will cut electric use. Even so, Greenpeace has discredited Facebook for not doing enough.
Electricity From Renewable Resources
The report charges that Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, Yahoo, and Google are still building new data centers that rely on coal. The group says that companies should build data centers in areas where they can get electricity from renewable resources. It singled out Apple for building a center in North Carolina, where coal supplies about 60 percent of the state's electricity.
Computer Giants Use Energy-Efficient Data Centers
Facebook, Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft have already owned data centers near large sources of renewable energy. These companies are doing an increasingly good job of making sure their data centers are very energy-efficient. The fact that they're doing it to help their bottom line doesn't matter, it does help reduce global warming.
