Facebook’s revamped Safety Center offers guidance to specific groups of users

In an attempt to counter the criticism by privacy advocates about its laidback approach towards security policies, Facebook Tuesday released a revamped version of its online Safety Center – making it more user-friendly, as well as including requisite guidance for specific groups of Facebook users.

With the Safety Center revamp being the first major project that Facebook has completed with its December-launched global Safety Advisory Board, Elliot Schrage - the company’s VP of Global Communications and Public Policy - said: “We want our approach for improving safety to be as simple, easy and effective as our approach to improving Facebook's user experience. Our Safety Advisory Board has been a tremendous resource in developing this next generation of safety resources and offering us ideas for new initiatives.”

The redesigned Facebook Safety Center now includes content from a number of safety organizations, along with specific resources for teenagers, parents, teachers, and law enforcement officials.

Specifically speaking, the advice section for teenagers cautions them against giving out passwords to strangers, and urges them to personalize their privacy settings; while the section for parents and teachers provides advice about helping children accept friends; blocking potential cyberbullies; improving the use of privacy settings; and reporting abusive behavior to Facebook administrators.

The advice section for law enforcement officials gives details about contacting Facebook in case of finding offenders like suspected sex criminals; and about reporting suspected terrorist activity.
